sew what?
June 26, 2009
as i was hanging the fourth load of laundry out to dry, it occurred to me that this was really the first day that’s felt like a new york summer. ick, dude. unrelenting heat and humidity, which for me just means that i’ll be hiding indoors and sweating inordinately when i’m not. when it comes to weather, i often wonder why i live here. it’s rained 21 out of the last 26 days. in fact, as i write this from my centrally air-conditioned apartment, it starting to look like i’m going to have to pull those clothes in. i give it another 20 minutes to start raining again. huh. i was about to write that i had really digressed here, but it would appear that i never actually began. let me try this again.

it's a terrible picture, but it showed off the max studio pants. moschino top, max mara belt, juno shoes.
yesterday i found a fantastic pair of size 2 max studio linen pants for $3.42. sad, but true, a size 2 is considerably too large for me, but i was pretty sure that for that price, i could macgyver up something amazing. i decided that rather than tailoring the waist and hips, i’d let them ride low and only fix up the hems. i cut the hems off an old pair of black nudie jeans and made 8 three inch strips. i ironed the legs of the pants as if i were going to simply hem them and then sewed the strips to the inside of the legs, rolled up the hems and sewed the other end of the seams to the outside of the pants. sound confusing? it wasn’t. just a little time consuming. i’m really happy with the result.

all in a day's work.
in the spirit of recycling, and cause my boo liked the prototype so much, i grabbed a couple of old t-shirts that we weren’t wearing anymore but couldn’t quite part with and made a couple of pillows. i laid the shirts flat, rested a pillow form on the center of the graphic and cut through both the front and the back at the same time. i then sewed the two sides together (graphic side facing in), leaving about 5 inches open on the bottom side, and turned it right side out. i pushed the pillow in the case and whip-stitched the open edge closed. voila. squishy t-shirt pillows.
that concludes homemaker friday. it’s raining again and i’m going to clean myself up and go see the new transformers movie now.
